Identify your target

Once you've performed a 'resection' and gained clarity by accurately locating your current position, it's time to identify your target.

You cannot create a route card without first being clear on both your start point and destination.

This isn't as easy as it sounds.

It's likely that you've dreamt about certain achievements... or perhaps considered how much greener the grass would be if you could reach a specific point.

But this isn't scratching the surface. You're capable of so much more than you think.

The problem is, you don't give your creative mind a chance to do its thing.

Life is noisy, full of distractions, and therefore your head is too.

Let me ask you this... do you have new ideas popping into your head regularly? Where are you when you suddenly remember things that you forgot to add to your to-do list? It's common for blokes to only experience creativity and enhanced memory when they're in the shower. Why? Because that's the only moment in the day when they're not distracted by noise.

I bet you don't even give yourself the opportunity when you're taking a shit on the toilet because you take your phone in with you.

Audiobooks, Podcasts, Reading, Music and Youtube videos... they can all be viewed as constructive use of your time. But they're also adding to the noise unless you're regularly accessing your creative headspace by spending some time alone with your thoughts.

I genuinely believe that mastering the art of silencing your mind is one of the most important skillsets in today's noisy society.

I personally used to find it impossible to sit in hot bath for 20 minutes without becoming highly irritable and agitated. Taking my phone in with me was a non-negotiable. I'd have to gamify time in the sauna by challenging myself with countdown timers, as the frustration and boredom brought on by spending time alone was just too much.

This was until I recognised how bad this really was. Developing the skillset of decompression has been one of my most impactful yet!... and I'd like to help you too... but more on that in the near future.

So put your phone on do not disturb. Sit in the garden or go for a walk without any technology or distraction. Spend the first 5-10 minutes focusing on nothing but silencing your mind before taking a pen to paper and considering where you truly want to be.

Don't stop when you feel you have a goal or two. Give it time and go beneath your regular surface level answers.

Consider all six pillars of your life:

  • Health & Performance

  • Relationships

  • Finances

  • Occupation / Business

  • Personal Development

  • Fun, Rest & Decompression

Don't fall into the trap of convincing yourself that an ambition in one pillar will solve others. I've worked with a number of incredible athletes who were in great shape that were beyond miserable and unhappy because their relationships were a mess. I've been employed in professional sport by some incredibly successful and wealthy business owners that were an absolute mess with poor health, no sense of decompression and false relationships.

Achieve a moment of silence. Get creative. Go deep on all six pillars.

You'll experience a sense of enthusiasm and drive like no other.
